Rahul VOHRA
Starting off in 1984, apart from his abiding interest in acting, in films, TV and theatre, Rahul Vohra has a deep understanding of Indian folk and classical arts and of World aesthetics, theatre and cinema. First, as founding Co-ordinator of Sarthi, a voluntary group set up to address basic rights of traditional artists and artisans, and since 1999 with his own independent company APOSTROPHE 99, Rahul Vohra has directed productions with troupes of performing artists and craftspersons from all across the country, showcasing their work in various parts of the world including France, Spain, Reunion and Hong Kong.
Some of his famous projects include the 1993 The Gypsy Road and NAVRASA at the Festival Printemps des Comédiens, Montpellier and in the Reunion Island, Jhalak at the World Cultural Forum Barcelona, 2004; and The Palace of Winds with an international cast of artists from six countries to inaugurate the festival Printemps des Comédiens(Montpellier) in June 2005 and in 2008 the Mahabharata with Jean Claude Carrière and Teejan Bai and an International cast In Reunion Island. Rahul has been an artistic consultant on several documentary film projects for various French TV channels such as TF1, FR2, FR3, Arte, Planète and Paris Première.
Rahul has acted in many seminal feature films and short films in Hindi, English and in French such as Mira Nair’s Kama Sutra - A Tale Of Love and Monsoon Wedding, Sabrina Dhawan’s Saanjh and Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades and Franck Appréderis’ Le Passeur d’enfants de Pondichéry. On television, he has featured amongst others in shows such as Amma and Family, Good Morning Today, Bhanwar, Yeh Dil Kya Kare, RAAZ and Aap Jo Bolen Han to Han and hosted The Real India Travel Show on BBC World.
After graduating in Economics from the University of Delhi, Rahul Vohra completed a Masters in French Cinema and Translation from the Jawaharlal Nehru University and then specialized in International Cultural Management with a state doctorate at FIC/UNESCO, Paris and the University of Burgundy, Dijon, France. Rahul is fluent in English, Hindi and French and can also speak some Punjabi and Spanish apart from an understanding of various Indian languages.
Rahul was a consultant to Jean Claude Carrière for his book DICTIONARY OF INDIA LOVERS and has delivered lectures on the influence of the Panchtantra and ancient Indian literature on Lafontaine’s fables, in the festival LIRE EN FETES, on the relationship between Bhava, Rasa, and Tala in Indian Performing Arts, at the Festival Lire en Fetes at Champ Borne in Reunion Island and on Rasa; India’s gift to World Aesthetics, at the Newhouse Centre for the Arts, Wellesley College, Boston. Having worked with theatre greats like Jacques Lasalle and Ariane Mnouchkine and embodying Indo-French Cultural Relations he has played the principal lead nearly 900 times in the famous musical Bharati, which ran to full houses since 2006 in Paris and across the Globe, viewed live by close to 3.5 million spectators. More recently, he was Lead Actor and India Producer for Claude Lelouch’s latest film in India, One Plus One.
Artistic Advisor on the Board of N N Sippy Films, on the Board of Governors of the FDCI (Fashion Design Council of India) and on the Governing Body of the Goa Kala Academy College of Theatre Arts, a member of the SACD (Societé des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques), of the Screen Writers Association, of the IFTPC and an Honorary citizen of Montpellier, Rahul has conferred the top civilian honour, Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) by the Government of France in 2014, for significant contribution to theatre and cinema.
